Missing in Aceh, Indonesia

From our comments:

I am searching for my friend, Dewi Safitri, from Indonesia. Her birthdate: 21st Oct. 1973. We had thought her safe but this week received an IM from her brother Rey and sister Aman that she was in Aceh, and is now missing. The last postal address I have for her was her brother's in Yogyakarta, so we have no way of knowing exactly where she was at the time of the earthquake and tsunami. I have posted her photo, and registered her name with Aceh Media Center, airputih.or.id, ICRC, and Newscover. If anyone has any information on Dewi's whereabouts, please contact me via email, lyonnesse23@hotmail.com. Thank you. ~Diana Pritchard

New Missing Persons Website - InternetAid.org

A new website and Crises center have been created in Bangkok for collecting more information of the missing persons from the Tsunami catastrophe.

Collected information from us will automatically be sent to different missing person’s location around Thailand, Embassies and the Thailand CSI unit in Phuket and Pang Nga.

The person posting, Embassies Authority’s and C.S.I in Thailand will be able to edit and delete the post as soon as the person has been found. A function that before this not existed.

The center will be opened for people to use internet, post ads, talk with fellow compatriots, make overseas calls, post pictures, and add more information to what is happening on a “we remember” website.

Volunteers from different countries run the center through a website company in central Bangkok.

Please visit www.internetaid.org and make a difference today

Thailand : Free Internet Face Recognition Service

PeopleMatch - peoplematch.rc.tv/peoplematch

A website set up by RC Group, a specialist biometric company in Hong Kong, offers a free face-matching service to families of the tsunami victims in Phuket Thailand.

Photographs of the dead and injured taken by volunteers in hospitals and emergency centres in Phuket have been loaded on to the site. Families may upload photos of the missing victims which will be automatically scanned against the database using a facial mapping system. Close matches will then be emailed back for relatives to see if it is their loved one. This is a free service, and it is being updated hourly.

Thailand - internet site aids identification of tsunami victims

Source: ABC News Online

Thailand has set up a web site, http://www.csiphuket.com, for those searching for relatives and friends killed or injured in the tsunami that has swamped tourist-packed beaches along its south-west coast.

The site has been developed by volunteers, including programmers and web site developers.
It aims to put all data available on the dead and missing in one place instead of forcing people to surf over 80 sites set up to track the tragedy.

In a round-the-clock operation, volunteers in the island resort of Phuket enter data from forms filled out by those looking for people at hospitals and Buddhist temples being used as temporary morgues.

They have data on about 4,900 people listed as dead, missing and injured.

Photos of unidentified bodies, bloated and decomposing, are posted on the site, in the hope clothing or jewellery or other personal items pictured with the bodies can be used to identify them.

People can also submit missing-persons forms online.

"Once the body is identified, we take the picture out. We want to respect the families," Chitcharen Vesespadthaya, a businessman who is managing the web site, said.

The site supports seven languages, with more to be added.

Indian Marine Biologist (Tripathy) Missing

UPDATE: FOUND!

Source : NDTV

Among the thousands missing after Sunday's tsunami disaster is a young biologist from Cuttack in Orissa, who was working in Great Nicobar.

Even a week after the tsunami disaster, the wife and parents of the young marine biologist have no information on his whereabouts. Ambika Prasanna Tripathy, the biologist, was working on the Leatherback sea turtles near Campbell Bay in Great Nicobar.

The last time he had talked to his family was a week before the tsunami struck the island.

"We don't have any information about him," said Pratibha Tripathy, wife.

Uncertainty looms

Tripathy was camping at Point 41 in Great Nicobar for a research project funded by the Andaman Nicobar Environment Trust ( ANET ).

Because the area is not open to civilians and the communication lines are also dead, the family has been appealing to the Coastguard and local government agencies for information, but all in vain.

"In the news they say the tribal pockets there are alright. If that is the case, the area must also be alright and somebody should have gone and found out about the welfare of the people there, especially the outsiders," said N K Tripathy, the father.

Although Tripathy's wife and father have not lost hopes, it's been a nightmarish, week-long wait for his mother. And until there is some information available on the researcher, each passing minute only adds to the family's worst apprehensions.

After the World Trade Center we built www.disasterid.com. The function of
the program is to match found persons and items with those looking to aid in
identification efforts, and:

1.  Provides a platform for rescue workers to enter and house data regarding
found persons and items.
2.  For the general public to search said data for identification.
3.  For the general public to enter and house data of their missing persons.
4.  For rescue workers to search and match persons and items they found with
posted information.

We put it together with Interpol's Disaster Victim Identification form data points and with some review from DMORT.

We designed the backend database structure with a scaleable 'on the fly'
category creation tool; so as different identifying categories are realized,
administrators can create categories and sub-categories easily; so as varied
personal articles are recovered, structured data input is possible.

We built it out of frustration from 9/11 as a voluntary effort.  We were not
able to get any wide-scale adoption to it during the Trade Center tragedy.
We still believe that the very lengthy process of recovering items and
identifying persons from the World Trade Center would have been greatly
reduced.

We would like to offer the program to India to help in the recovery efforts,
but do not know how to proceed.  We would plan to redo the front page and
related site graphics and presentation to a world perceptive rather than the
current US brand.

Find Missing Persons in Phuket, Thailand

Thanks to an anonymous reader who pointed to this excellent Phuket Gazette (a Local Newspaper in Phuket, Thailand) link where you can view and post information about missing people. It also has tons of information about the numbers you can call.

Links to lists of injured, deceased, missing in the greater Phuket area

This link, phuketitcity.com, will take you to a database in Phuket which keeps an up-to-date list of the deceased and injured in the greater Phuket area.

This link in English is labeled "Lists of unknown person" will take you to a photo gallery of unidentified bodies. This link is legitimate, it was put up by hospitals in the Phuket area in order to help identify those bodies, most of whom were foriengers. We must caution you that the photos are extremely graphic, and they are not intended for gawkers.

Please be respectful and kindly avoid the site unless you are searching for someone who have gone missing in the greater Phuket area. There are a lot of people searching for their loved ones, please leave the bandwidth for those who are in extreme need.

Also this site, Dinsormai.com, has a collection of links that go to pretty much the same database. You could try it there if the first links were unavailable due to high traffic.
